Innovative Tuning Takes CSCS Triple Crown

Once again the V88 controlled Subaru STI from Innovative Tuning breaks another lap record.

Round 3 of the Canadian Sport Compact Series held at Mosport DDT northeast of Toronto was history in the making. The last event before the track is torn down for redesign and expansion provided the opportunity to secure a lap record that will never be broken. This attracted the Can Jam sponsored Canadian Touring Car GS Class Subaru STI as well as the usual CSCS heavy hitters including James Houghton's Teknotik sponsored Acura.

Mosport DDT is the most technical track hosting CSCS time attack competition, combining elevation change, blind corners, varied curbing, a high speed off camber downhill sweeper and complex offset uphill esses. Having never seen the track before, Innovative Tuning driver/owner Mike McGinnis was eager to take a peak.

Following a few recognizance laps, Mike ran a single hot lap in practice 1 which was almost 2 seconds quicker than the previous track record. Off to a solid start, but knowing he wouldn't be the only one to surpass the mark set the year prior, he pushed harder in practice 2. With far more power than grip coming out of low speed corners, the Innovative Tuning unlimited AWD class time attack car was smoking the tires and putting on a show for fans. Unfortunately the six speed transmission wasn't enjoying it. During P2 the syncros began locking out shifts so the car was parked to avoid further wear.

After some discussion of optimal line through the uphill esses with Innovative Tuning sponsored pro rally driver Chris Martin and considering sectors where shifts could be avoided without massive time penalty, a plan for the time attack session was set. Drive fast. Shift slow.

After watching another sold out field set their times, top qualifiers Houghton and McGinnis set off with a sprawling crowd onhand waiting to hear the new track record. As you'll see in this video link, McGinnis stuck to the plan, improved his qualifying time despite the mechanical handicap, and once again set a time nobody could match.

Subsequent CSCS rounds in the 2013 championship season are repeats so in just 3 rounds Innovative Tuning has secured overall wins and CSCS lap records at all three tracks Canada's biggest sport compact series visits. Look for their beast dubbed Voltron to step things up as they attempt to reset the TMP track record with the help of a front differential from their new sponsor Cusco at Round 4.
